Greetings! The 49th Annual Northeast Algal Symposium will convene April 16-18, 2010 in Bristol, RI, at Roger Williams University. Co-conveners Brian Wysor and Chris Lane invite you to join us for an exciting weekend.

The NEAS symposium will include a wide range of oral and poster presentations from the many disciplines of phycology. As always, the 2010 meeting will provide a relaxed and informal environment for students and professionals alike to meet with colleagues, exchange ideas and make new friends. Awards will be presented for outstanding posters and oral presentations prepared by undergraduate and graduate students. NEAS members take great pride in their commitment to student advancement, and extend an especially warm welcome to all students with algal interests.
This year, the theme of the symposium is “Algal Biodiversity: Shifts in Algal Distributions” and we are excited to have Dr. Olivier DeClerck, Ghent University, Belgium, as our keynote speaker. We will also have symposium talks by Dr. Marcie Marston (Roger Williams University), Dr. Tatiana Rynearson (University of Rhode Island), Dr. Craig Schneider (Trinity College) and Dr. Peter Siver (Connecticut College) on population genetics and biogeography of viruses and algal groups. It is not too soon to plan for your presentations and mark your calendars with the dates of this important symposium. Abstract and registration deadlines will be March 12 and March 15, 2010 respectively. A call for both will be announced in the 2nd circular in mid-February.

Venue Information
Symposium activities will be held on the Bristol campus of Roger Williams University.
Lodging will be available on the 16th and 17th of April at the Bristol Harbor Inn in Bristol, RI and the Holiday Inn Express in Middletown, RI. Rooms shared by participating students will be partially subsidized by the Barry Colt Student Development Fund. This subsidy will be limited to the first 20 student rooms, so register early, and organize arrangements with fellow students.
